Citibank Korea sponsors 530 million won for the National YWCA of Korea to support activities of 2009 ‘Learning and Experiencing Financial Class for Youth - Think Money’

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Citibank Korea (CEO YK Ha,www.citibank.co.kr) held an agreement signing ceremony with the YWCA of Korea (President Kyo-ja Kang,www.ywca.or.kr) for ‘Learning and Experiencing Financial Class for Youth - Think Money’ and delivered a Citi Foundation donation of 530 million won (USD 419,000). Around 40 related individuals including the YWCA of Korea President Kyo-ja Kang, Citibank Korea CEO YK Ha and Standing Auditor Sung-Ho Lee participated in the ceremony, held at the YWCA hall in Myeong-dong, Seoul.

‘Learning and Experiencing Financial Class for Teenagers-Think Money’ is a social contribution activity that has been conducted since 2006 in order to help Korea’s future leaders, teenagers, to establish the proper sense of finance and promote their understanding of finance by integrating the financial institution’s know-how and professionalism in campaigns for teenagers. Citibank Korea has donated a total of USD 1.285 million dollars (1.2 billion won) so far through Citi Foundation over the past three years.

The program, which had been conducted mainly for elementary and middle-school students, is now expected to expand the target to high school students in its fourth year, 2009. Around 150 executives and employees of Citibank Korea and around 150 volunteers from YWCA will serve as lecturers in programs such as school courses, finance experience classes, after-school class, cooperative school, multi-cultural home financial class, special courses for middle school third graders and high school third graders, set up through schools and YWCA branches in 35 areas nationwide.

YWCA will hold a symposium on finance education in order to raise awareness of the importance of early finance education and strengthen network for finance education and will focus on encouraging discussion session among school heads and finance class for parents. In addition, it will expand education for those living in remote areas and the underprivileged class by beefing up online education through programs that strengthen finance education targeting children from multicultural families and publishing an E-book.

Elementary and middle school students participating in Think Money over the past three years number around 140,000 and around 330 Citibank Korea employees and around 250 YWCA volunteers, who received lecture education, conducted finance education courses. Moreover, YWCA has been making various efforts to help experts to develop customized finance education models such as Think Money experience episode contest, Think Money translation and essay contest, finance experience campaign, finance board game and video learning data development.

Citibank Korea CEO YK Ha, who participated in the signing ceremony, mentioned, “The Think Money program has truly cemented its position as Korea’s most representative and systematic finance education model. Citibank Korea will continue to support the program in order to awaken our society to the need for early finance education and develop finance education suited to the requirements of beneficiaries.”

Meanwhile, YWCA of Korea President Kyo-ja Kang said, “YWCA will develop and distribute various textbooks and other data to make the program a finance education model, in which schools, regional society and families participate together and create. The organization will also make efforts to include finance education in regular education courses by establishing a guideline on finance education that links school systems from elementary, middle school to high school.”
