From the end of 2008 towards early 2009, BLU and lamp makers had to undergo hardships of laying people off as drastically reduced output. The difficulty was most evident for Taiwan supply chain compared to other regions. In case of Taiwan region, the two distinctive panel makers, AUO and CMO had to endure rapidly reduced shipments and most damages came from reduction in TV sector. Under this difficult situation, Korea based Samsung and LG Display showed continuous shipment increase in TV sector; under the severe global economic recession, Samsung and LG had suffered from revenue/profit perspective but recorded strong results based on shipments by strategically responding to the situation.
However, beginning February 2009, demands showed a recovering signs. Because of the increased orders from customers, component/material industry including BLU had to readjust to meet the order quantities. As the timeline was the “low” point for inventory status throughout all supply chain, inventories which can act as a buffer were short and many companies had reduced workforce in order to adjust profitability. The increase in demands was sudden yet comforting, and demands are continuously on the rise during March 2009 followed by February.
BLU-use lamps demand for 4Q’08 recorded 17% Q/Q or 530 million units which was also 21% lower than 4Q’07. Under this harsh situation, Korea based Wooree ETI had surpassed market share of CCFL supply, that had been dominated by Japanese makers, with 13% market share during 4Q’08 to be placed in first largest market share. In cases of Japanese makers, major customers are Taiwan based companies which led them to reduce shipments and high YEN currency rate continued: Accordingly, 4Q’08 shipments were radically reduced.
Wooree ETI have strong customer base that include LG Display and continued to develop & apply cost saving technologies like SEFL which enabled the company at higher level in terms of BOM that led Wooree ETI to achieve favorable results when overall industry were undergoing hardships. In 2009, Korea based BLU Lamp maker Wooree ETI and Kumho Electric, Inc. are expected to show continuous growth. Meanwhile, Displaybank forecasts 2009 total CCFL demands to show 0.4% decrease Y/Y or 2.36 Billion units.
