March 2009 LCD Panel Shipments Up 18.2% Y/Y
According to Displaybank (CEO: Peter Kwon, www.displaybank.com), a market research company specialized in Display & PV industry through “Monthly Large-area TFT-LCD Panel Shipment Data” April update, March ’09 shipments increased 28.8% M/M to 38.4 million units. In terms of revenue, March shipments also increased 30.0% M/M to US$ 4 Billion.
Displaybank explains the large shipments increase in M-o-M came from the increased orders from Set makers that are striving to increase inventory level under relatively cheaper current panel price, and increased orders yielded from rising LCD TV sales in China, North America and Europe.
Most notable change was in LCD TV panels which shipped 10.2 million units that posted first positive growth Y-o-Y during 2009. Recent demand increases for under 32-inches TV panel in China region and more than anticipated sales increase in the developed regions including the US and Europe were explained as major causes.
In terms of market share (“M/S”) based on revenue, Samsung Electronics maintained the largest share at No.1 position with 29% M/S followed by LG Display in No.2 position with 25% M/S. CMO was positioned at No.3 with 15.0% M/S. M/S for Korea-based makers recorded 53% which had increased 12% from 41% during March 2008.
Based on shipment units, Samsung Electronics maintained its No.1 position for 2 consecutive months with 26% M/S followed by LG Display at No.2 position with 25% M/S. AUO recorded 15% M/S at No.3 position.
Panel makers are responding to the increased demand by raising utilization by 10~30% from February 2009. During April ’09, Monitor and TV panel orders are continually on the rise and shipments are expected to increase 10% M/M, according to Displaybank.
