Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The 1Q’09 global PDP module shipments recorded 2.86 million units. According to Displaybank (CEO: Peter Kwon, www.displaybank.com), a market research company specialized in Display and PV industry through its “Monthly PDP Module Shipment Data,” 1Q’09 PDP module shipments reported 2.86 million units or US$1.014 billion in terms of revenue which decreased 19% and 34% Y/Y respectively. The major causes of the down shipments and revenue were decreased TV sales from global economic recession, effects of 1Q being off-season and PDP business withdrawal from Japan-based Hitachi and Pioneer, according to Displaybank.

Hitachi and Pioneer officialized their withdrawal from PDP panel business during April 2008 and completely withdrawn from PDP module production in 1Q’09 after having been adjusting their output. While Hitachi plans to manufacture PDP TV through purchasing PDP modules from Panasonic, the world’s largest PDP TV maker, but Pioneer PDP TV business will end this year under its plan to completely withdraw from TV business including LCD TV.

As Hitachi and Pioneer have withdrawn from PDP panel business in 1Q’09, only 3 Japan and Korea-based makers are expected to continue PDP panel business from 2Q’09 and 4 makers based in Japan, Korea and China are expected to maintain PDP business from 2H’09 when China-based COC kicks off its PDP production for the first time.

Even though the first-quarter PDP module shipments largely decreased Y/Y, second-quarter shipments are expected to record an increase. Panasonic plans to continuously increase its shipments for high-efficient, Neo PDP which was newly introduced this year, and Korea-based Samsung SDI and LG Electronics are planning to increase their 2Q shipments greater than 1Q’09.

In the second-quarter, the LCD panel price that have been continuously on decreasing trend is rising that the pace of decreasing PDP module price is expected to be moderated and maintained under the effects of rising LCD price.

For 2009 global TV market, 40-inches category PDP products are expected to undergo difficulties as 40-inches category LCD and PDP prices are already equal or LCD is even inexpensive for specific models, and FHD shares in LCD are on the rise. However for the 50-inches category, FHD shares in PDP are rapidly increasing and PDP products still maintains its price competitiveness from LCD that PDP makers will have to focus more into securing competitiveness for over 50-inch products, according to Displaybank.
