Samsung to Focus on Booming Mobile WiMAX Service in Asia
Samsung Electronics has established partnerships with 24 major mobile WiMAX operators in 20 countries for commercial and trial service. The company has been a leader of mobile WiMAX industry not only in terms of the business scale but also providing creative business models for each specific market. For example, Clearwire in U.S recently disclosed a roll-out plan to bring Mobile WiMAX to 80 cities covering 120 million people by 2010, while UQ Communication in Japan announced to cover more than 90% of population by 2013 and Yota in Russia aims to expand Mobile WiMAX service to 40 cities by 2012.
Moreover, Samsung has proven its leadership in Mobile WiMAX technology through the world’s first possession of all three bands of certification from the WiMAX Forum: 2.3GHz (Wave1), 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz (Wave2). With these certifications, Samsung can easily customize and localize the equipment and device technologies for every local service provider.
At WiMAX Forum Congress Asia 2009, the Asia’s largest WiMAX focused event, Samsung enhanced its indoor solution line-ups with Light Series 3 Plus base station. Light Series 3 Plus base station improves performance and convenience of deployment with several edge technologies. This compact-size base station equipped with Samsung’s own SoC (System on Chip), supports PoE (Power over Ethernet) for power supply and IEEE 1588 protocol for time synchronization, thus making it possible to transmit all of data traffic, synchronization signal and system power through just a single Ethernet data line.
The super mini base station U-RAS Femto was also exhibited for indoor solution. In addition, Samsung introduced the U-RAS Flexible base station as its hottest product for outdoor solution. It receives favorable reactions on the market because its separated design of Radio unit and Digital unit is most suitable for flexible Mobile WiMAX network deployment. A lot of operators in the globe selected U-RAS Flexible base station for their 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz Mobile WiMAX commercial service.
Samsung is steadily introducing various types of customized devices. At the show, Samsung unveiled total six types of Mobile WiMAX devices including Mondi (model name: SWD-M100), a Mobile Internet Device, NC10 mini notebook, Ultra Mobile PC, PDA, PC Card and USB dongle. Especially, the Mondi is on display for the first time in Asia. It has a compact slider form factor with a full QWERTY keyboard and carries powerful features including 4.3-inch full touch screen, a set of widgets and supporting various web services. Clearwire plans to launch the device next month in U.S.
