May 2009 Large-area TFT-LCD Panel Shipments Indicate Record-High Volume Ever
Displaybank views the record-high May shipments as the sign of clearing once existing concerns about the TFT-LCD panel market when the shipment has hit the record low in January 2009 with 23.74 million units, which now turned to record-high shipments within 5 months.
The LCD TV panel shipments increased 13.7% M/M and 41.6% from Y/Y to transform the LCD TV market atmosphere into a positive one. The LCD TV shipments comprise about 28% of the total large-area panel shipments and 56% of the total revenue.
In terms of Revenue market share (M/S) by makers, Samsung Electronics recorded 27% M/S to maintain No.1 ranking. LG Display follows with 25% M/S with No.2 ranking followed by AUO with 16.0% M/S. Korea-based makers’ M/S comprised about 52% which has sharply increased from 44% in May 2008.
In terms of Shipment Volume market share, LG Display recorded 25% M/S to maintain No.1 ranking followed by Samsung Electronics with 24% M/S. The two Korea-based makers are leading the market as their shipments exceeded 10 million units per month following last April. AUO recorded 18.0% M/S and positioned in No.3 ranking.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Ricky Park, Senior Researcher at Displaybank noted “Lately, the tight panel supply & demand situation continues as the demands in China and North America markets record continuous increases and some panel makers undergo difficulties in getting their components delivered. We expect to see slowed down pace of June Shipments increase even with the increased demands because there will be some makers that will certainly have difficulties in glass supply.”
