In February 2009, Displaybank had forecasted the 2009 installation capacity to 5.2GW which is 6% decrease Y/Y, but the company adjusted the forecast downward to 4.8GW by reflecting additional demand decreases. Displaybank presents two reasons for the downward adjustment; one is greater global economic recession effect than the original forecast, and the other is radical shrinkage of government subsidy programs by several PV related major nations that have been active thus far. Spain recorded 2.3GW already in 2008 and led the global demand, but the nation’s 2008 installation capacity has radically decreased to 0.4GW and significantly affected the demand decrease. Several nations including the U.S., Japan, and China have slightly expanded the subsidy programs, but in Displaybank’s analysis, they are insufficient to overcome the effect of global recession.
Such shrinking movement of subsidy programs was exhibited in Korea as well. Recently, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy in Korea announced to support 200MW, the outstanding volume of feed-in tariff, for the next three years by dividing it into 50MW in 2009, 70MW in 2010, and 80MW in 2011. Therefore, Displaybank forecasts the Korea PV installation demand will record about 78MW (50MW feed-in tariff + “million green homes distribution plan” + others) in 2009, 115MW in 2010, and 154MW in 2011 despite the fact that it has recorded 278MW and No.4 world ranking in 2008. If this forecast is correct, the 2008 Korea TV installation based global market share is expected to decrease from 5.0% in 2008 to 1.1% by 2013 which will be even lower than 1.3% in 2006.
Displaybank plans to hold “KPC2009” at COEX Grand Ballroom in Samsung-dong, Seoul during June 25~26, 2009 to share more detailed analysis and forecast on the current PV market technology trend. This event will present key personnel from local makers including Displaybank, Samsung Electronics, and LG Electronics along with overseas makers like Ferro, Veeco, and Siemens as speakers.
