Global PDP module shipments for the last Second-quarter of 2009 were at 3.27 million units. This is an increase of 14% from 2.86 million units in the First-quarter of 2009 that the PDP shipments have once again exceeded monthly average of 1 million units after single quarter. The Second-quarter shipments were aggregated with the results from Panasonic, Samsung SDI, LG Electronics and Orion PDP after Japan-based Hitachi and Pioneer had withdrawn from the PDP business in the last First-quarter of 2009.
Displaybank analyst, Jusy Hong noted “even with the shipment increase Q-o-Q, the growth rate still indicates negative rate compared to the same period in 2008”.
The notable aspect of this Quarter was the increase in 50-inches shares as well as FHD. In case of 50-inches, it comprised 36% of the overall 2Q PDP module shipments which were historic record-high for the size and FHD shares closing in 30% range with 29% share in 2Q’09, Displaybank noted.
For the shipment shares by maker, Japan-based Panasonic recorded largest share with 43% followed by Samsung SDI and LG Electronics at 31% and 26% respectively. These three PDP module makers comprise almost 100% of the total PDP module shipments. China-based COC kicked off its PDP panel production from March 2009, however the problem of continued low efficiency hinders COC to reach volume production level that Displaybank explained three makers, Panasonic, Samsung SDI and LG Electronics would continue to comprise most of PDP module shipments until the end of 2009.
