The 2Gb DDR3 DRAM features both 40nm-class process technology and 1.35 volt engineering, so that even if the volume is larger due to the high-volume DRAM module, the total power used is actually lower. The 40nm-class DDR3 DRAM is an ideal memory solution in that it combines the three key benefits of high volume, high efficiency and low power.
Samsung’s ‘Green Memory’ campaign aims to spread awareness for the superiority of servers using the new 40nm-class DDR3 DRAM.
First, a website (http://www.samsung.com/DDR3) has been created to promote 40nm DDR3’s high-efficiency. Using the tagline “Less energy, More Speed & More Memory,” this website provides a detailed explanation of DDR3’s energy efficiency. It also features a calculator to estimate cost savings by using DDR3 products.
In addition, Samsung is reinforcing its collaboration and technological support for clients who participate in energy saving programs in Japan, U.S., and the EU.
U.S.-based server providers are moving toward adopting Green IT products that reduce power consumed by CPU and memory to respond to stricter environmental policies and the standards of Energy Star, a national energy efficiency program.
Samsung Electronics hopes to amplify customer benefits and meet the goals of environmentally friendly programs by pioneering the development of low power DRAM products and pursuing active technology exchange with server companies. It will also hold various activities to foster cooperation, including exhibitions and seminars.
“40nm-class DDR3 DRAM achieves a 1.35V usage level, which is only a quarter of the energy used by 60nm-class DRAM, the mainstream product in the DRAM market today. It provides a single solution to the growing demand for servers to host larger volumes and achieve higher efficiencies,” said Dongsoo Jun, Executive Vice President, Memory Sales and Marketing, Samsung Electronics. “40nm-class DDR3 DRAM will not only provide a solution for servers, but will extend to the entire IT marketplace to reach the end consumer and provide many benefits such as maintenance cost reductions.”
Samsung began to mass produce 50nm-class DDR3 DRAM products in September 2009. Demand from large server companies continued to increase, expanding server market share from 30 percent in the beginning of 2008 to 50 percent at the end of 2008. Since July 2009, Samsung has been strengthening its market leadership with the mass production of 40nm-class DDR3 DRAM.
40nm class 2Gb DDR3 Sales Lineup:
- Server Market: 16 Gigabyte (GB) and 8GB Modules (RDIMM)
- Work Station and Desktop PCs: 4GB Modules (UDIMM)
- Laptop PCs: 4GB SODIMM
Projections from iSuppli, a research firm, show that the DDR3 portion of the entire DRAM market will reach 20 percent in 2009 and 82 percent in 2012. In the DDR3 market, 2Gb DRAM will grow around 15 times in volume from 600 million in 2010 to 8.8 billion in 2012.
