Samsung and VMAX Demonstrate Industry's First Mobile WiMAX Global Roaming Service
By offering an international and national roaming service demonstration using Samsung’s Mobile WiMAX systems and devices, the companies reaffirmed their leadership of the technology. The presentation showed that with the roaming service, Mobile WiMAX is capable of being used around the world. For roaming service between different service networks, the two networks should be interoperated by sharing registration information.
At the conference, Samsung and VMAX presented a Mobile Internet Device called Mondi™, which is registered on the Clearwire Mobile WiMAX service in the United States, accessible on VMAX’s network and equipped with all the services provided by VMAX. The demonstration also featured interoperability between VMAX’s Mobile WiMAX service in northern Taiwan and Tatung’s Mobile WiMAX network in southern Taiwan.
”This affirms the interoperability and maturity of Samsung WiMAX system, and it will enable VMAX to deliver the promises of WiMAX in Taiwan,” said Teddy Huang, President and CEO of VMAX.
VMAX Telecom plans to provide commercial Mobile WiMAX service this year in Taipei City, Taiwan and will expand the service to six additional major regions – including Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Keelung, Yilan and Lienchiang, using Samsung’s Mobile WiMAX equipment. VMAX Telecom is a joint venture between Taiwan’s two leading telecom corporations, Tecom and Vibo Telecom. The joint venture acquired the National Communications Commission (NCC) certified WiMAX license for the northern region of Taiwan in 2007.
“We’re very excited that Mobile WiMAX has entered a new phase of its global expansion with this successful demonstration,” said Woonsub Kim, executive vice president and head of the Telecommunication Systems Division at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung will continue to concentrate on providing the most convenient Mobile WiMAX service to satisfy our end users.”
Taiwan’s government is working on the “M-Taiwan” initiative, a project which aims to enhance Taiwan’s leadership position in WiMAX developments. The government is in the process of preparing a meeting between Taiwanese vendors and global telecom operators and encouraging many Taiwanese device providers to develop and launch various types of mobile WiMAX terminals.
Mobile WiMAX is the leading technology among the 4G candidates and already occupies an axis of the telecom industry as a real mobile broadband service in the global market. The number of global WiMAX deployments has reached approximately 504 networks in 145 countries. WiMAX Forum and Ecosystem participants announced their commitment to build and trial WiMAX Release 2 based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16m standard, which is a candidate for the IMT-Advanced radio interface, during ITU Telecom World 2009.
