LG Chemical Ranked No.1 for Three Consecutive Quarters in Large-area TFT-LCD Polarizer Market

Based on second-quarter of 2009, LG Chemical recorded 29% market share in large-area TFT-LCD polarizer market to be ranked No.1 position for three consecutive quarters. These and other findings are disclosed in Displaybank’s newly updated Polarizer & Optical Films Industry Trend Analysis, which covers polarizer and optical films market on a quarterly basis.

Polarizer for TFT-LCD comprises 95% of the total polarizer market. Looking at the market by application, market for LCD TV-use polarizer recorded US$800 million on second-quarter 2009 to comprise 52% of the total large-area TFT-LCD polarizer market. In terms of area, LCD TV-use polarizer comprised 57% of the total large-area TFT-LCD polarizer market in second-quarter 2009.

TV-use polarizer market share by maker based on second-quarter 2009 show LG Chemical in No.1 ranking with 30% followed by Nitto Denko in No.2 ranking with 29% and Sumitomo Chemical in No.3 ranking with 25% market share. Combined market share of the three companies reach 80%. As LG Chemical initiates its polarizer supply to IPS Alpha and Samsung Electronics, its market share is anticipated to go higher.

Monitor-use polarizer market share by maker based on second-quarter 2009 show LG Chemical in No.1 ranking with 37% market share followed by Nitto Denko in No.2 ranking with 19% and ACE Digitech at No.3 ranking with 16% market share. Taiwan’s CMMT and Daxon are rapidly increasing their market share to record 11% and 7% respectively in second-quarter 2009.

NotePC-use polarizer market share by maker show Sumitomo in No.1 ranking with 37% market share followed by Nitto Denko in No.2 ranking with 34% market share. Over 60% of NotePC market is dominated by Nitto Denko and Sumitomo. ACE Digitech was ranked in No.3 with 17% global market share by supplying 50% of Samsung’s total available NotePC polarizer demands.

Displaybank’s analyst, Irene Heo notes “combining all results discussed, LG Chemical was ranked No.1 position with 29% market share followed by 27% of Nitto Denko in No.2 ranking and 20% of Sumitomo Chemical in No.3 ranking in over 10” large-area TFT-LCD polarizer market based on second-quarter 2009”. Heo emphasized “the market share different between LG Chemical and Nitto Denko is almost 10% and ACE Digitech recorded 7% market share to be ranked in No.4 position. This shows continuing dominance of 2 Korean makers comprising 40% of global market share.”

Andy Yu, Vice President in Display Research group at Displaybank noted “global economic recession and contracted demand market led to decreased shipments that had negatively impacted panel makers from the fourth-quarter 2008 to first-quarter 2009- Korean polarizer makers took this difficult time as an opportunity to increase their market share. Also, rapid recovery that the panel industry saw from second-quarter 2009 brought reaffirmed strength of Korean polarizer makers to global polarizer market that was once dominated by Japanese makers.”
