The 4th Citi-Kyunghee University NGOs Intern Program begins
This program designed to development of civil society as well as young NGO leaders, who will lead the next generation NGOs, is supported by GCG International at Citi.and conducted by the Graduate School of NGO Studies, Kyung Hee University. Trainings are offered by NGO staffs and activities are conducted in major locations across Korea. The NGOs Intern Program launched in the first time in 2006 celebrates the fourth year now.
Any NGOs with full-time staffs and vivid activity record for the last 2 years in cities across nation can apply for the program. And, students attending 4-year Universities, including master’s courses, as of November 2009, can apply for participation in the program as far as he/she has an interest and willingness to join the NGO activities. 120 interns to be selected this year will work for 80 NGOs as full-time interns in the locations across Korea for 2 months from December 28, 2009 through February 19, 2010 during winter vacation.
The internship program is not just let the interns acquire experiences during the vacation period or provide NGOs with short-term manpower but promote to cultivate young leaders who will drive development of NGOs and lead the next generation NGOs. Therefore, keen interest in NGO activities, and experience and willingness to participate continuously was the key of selection process.
Selected interns will receive an orientation which includes training courses on history of Korean civil society, roles and functions of NGOs in civil society, projects, status of NGOs, etc. And, they will not only have an opportunity to learn activities and organization of NGOs but also see various possibilities such as need of building of matured citizenship, method of participation in civil society, etc. through intensive work for two months. Participating interns will receive salaries for two months and certificates.
Yung- Ku Ha(CEO, Citibank Korea Inc,) said, “ Citi has been assisting over 340 students to obtain diverse experience in 70 different NGOs for the past three years. I hope that this program will prosper as a partnership model to attain healthy society. Citi will continue to support this program to nurture new generation with healthy citizenship.”
Hwa-yong Lee, Ph.D., Graduate School of NGO Studies, Kyung Hee University, who is responsible for planning of the program said, “In fact, students who participated in last NGOs internship programs told that they recognized the need of participation in civil society through the internship work. On the other hand, NGOs, who worked with the students, mentioned that they were inspired by the positiveness and creative ideas of young students. Developing matured citizenship through civil society activities will contribute to not only NGOs but also maturity of society in the long run.”, and showed expectations of the fourth program.
