The event was aimed at raising the awareness about underprivileged people and enhancing the sense of community. Out of 120 students, about 70 working for NGOs in Seoul/Kyonggi areas joined the initiative. They chose 10 elderly people living alone to repair their houses and visited after-school child care center in Jeonnong-dong to provide support.
Citi-Kyung Hee Univ. NGO Internship Program, sponsored by CKI and organized by Kyung Hee NGO Graduate School, marks its fourth year, and has been offering local students with work experiences in NGOs and civic groups since 2006 to help them better understand what civil society is about and establish best corporate citizenship practices. The students of the 4th internship program are working full-time in one of 70 major NGOs in metropolitan cities across the country. The internship will last for two months from Dec. 28 2009 till Feb. 19, 2010.
Prof. Lee Hwa Yong of Kyung Hee Univ. NGO Graduate School said, “This day is designed to give students an opportunity to serve the community at least for a short period of time. We hope such an engagement with the community will help them increase the sense of community and give a thought about what the role of civil society is.” Prof. Lee has been leading the 4th internship program.
“While spending time with children, although it was a just one day, I could learn that our society can become better with our little compassion and attention,” said Lee, In-Ae, Kyung Hee Univ. student who joined the afterschool child care program. After the house repair activity, Kim, Sun-Mi, a student at Inha Univ. said, “I was sad to see how these elderly people are suffering financially. More support, including financial support, is necessary for these older people living alone.”
