CKI Grants USD 335,000 to National YWCA of Korea for financial education initiatives
With the aim of helping young children recognize the importance of real economy and raising financial awareness, CKI and National YWCA of Korea have been joining hands since 2006 by providing their respective expertise in financial knowhow and youth activity programs. CKI has sponsored the program for five years with the contributions from Citi Foundation that reached a total of USD 1.62 million (apprx. 1.82 billion KRW) for the past four years.
Think Money first started with a program for middle school students, but now the target has expanded to elementary/high school students as well as those from multicultural families. Marking its 5th year, the 2010 initiatives will be in line with 2009 that focused on enhancing specialty and differentiation of the program. As part of this effort, YWCA will run an advanced financial education program for youth; provide financial education for parents and children from multicultural families after a successful trial as a pilot program last year; offer intensive trainings to teachers for their skill upgrade; develop assessment tools for elementary school participants; and expand financial trainings to underprivileged people.
About 420 CKI employees have received trainings to volunteer for teaching in the past four years, and 503 YWCA instructors participated in think money program. Up until now as many as 180,000 elementary/middle/high school students benefited from the program. Moreover, CKI has employed its nationwide branches for its corporate social responsibility activities together with branch staff and volunteer employees such as production and distribution of souvenirs and grant of awards to students of excellence in the Think Money program. YWCA also made varied efforts for its part – organizing events such as Think Money Essay Contest, Think Money English Translation & Essay competition, and Experience the Finance. The organization also developed customized financial education models like board games or online education materials.
“Youth financial education programs like Think Money are truly a value investment for future generations as well as a meaningful contribution to the communities,” said CKI CEO Ha. “We are committed to continuously giving our young students the right money sense.”
President Kang of National YWCA of Korea also mentioned, “We hope that our financial education will be helpful to children and students, in particular, from low income families who have less opportunities in learning and hands-on experience. We also plan to continue our program for the growing number of multicultural families in our society.”
