LG Signs Up For Smart Watts, A Pioneering Smart Grid Project In Germany
The Smart Watts project, which is being backed by the German government, is develop-ing a decentralized intelligent electricity network that will make energy consumption far more efficient and tailored to actual requirements. As the main partner in the consor-tium , Kellendonk Elektronik is overseeing a pilot run for the project that is taking place in 500 homes in the German town of Aachen.
“Smart grid technology is certainly an attractive area for investment because it has the potential to resolve so many of today’s most pressing issues, including energy indepen-dence and global warming,” said Dr. Woo-hyun Paik, Chief Technology Officer at LG Electronics. “LG’s experience in the smart grid business will be a tremendous asset on the Smart Watts project partnership.”
Under the terms of the MOU, LG will provide servers and other hardware and conduct joint research with Kellendonk Elektronik into smart grid software standards.
“We are excited by this opportunity to work with LG to help expand the smart grid cov-erage in Europe and to take leadership in establishing standards that will be adopted by smart grid projects around the world,” said Mr. Peter Kellendonk, CEO of Kellendonk Elektronik.
Related to its smart grid strategy, LG is planning to release a series of consumer-focused products in mid-2011, including LED lighting, solar power generators and geothermal heat pumps .
