서울--(뉴스와이어)--After earlier this year opening the world’s first Apps Store for TVs, Samsung Electronics today announced the “Samsung Smart TV Challenge” aiming to find the most innovative applications for connected TVs, Blu-ray players and Blu-ray Home Theater Systems.

Designed to give application developers the opportunity to build new regional content and to bring more of the content and services that people want to the largest screen in the home, the contest continues Samsung’s global initiative to introduce a new era of Smart TV. Following similar competitions in Korea and the United States, the European Apps Contest announcement furthers Samsung’s commitment to provide a customized Smart TV experience in the home, spreading the initiative across the globe. With a total prize value of half a million Euros, the challenge is open to all developers in Europe.

To mark the beginning of the contest, Samsung unveiled its Smart Cubix display at IFA to represent the company’s Smart TV strategy and efforts to make the TV experience more convenient and enriched. At the Smart Cubix, visitors in the Samsung booth can experience 3D TV and Internet@TV simultaneously.

Samsung Smart TVs put consumers in full control of their TV viewing experience, by enabling the world’s first TV application store, Samsung Apps. With Samsung Internet@TV, viewers can watch the movie of their choice, turn the TV into a blackjack table, talk with loved ones overseas, and more.

“Through our strong partnerships with broadcasters, film studios, content providers, and entertainment organizations, we continue to see explosive growth in Smart TV,” said Boo-Keun Yoon, President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business. “By opening up Samsung Apps to all application developers, we are expecting a new paradigm of localized content to emerge.”

Samsung Smart TV Challenge Begins

With the Samsung Smart TV Challenge, Samsung is unlocking a new era in Smart TV by helping developers tap into the expanding market for TV applications. After the contest registration online, developers can go to the website, download the SDK (Software Developer Kit) for apps, and easily make apps for TV on their own.

The contest website will be opened during September, and applicants should join the Samsung Digital Forum to download the SDK. Applicants submit the final app and provide a video that showcases how the app works to Samsung by January 21, 2011. Entries will be judged based on idea quality, functional implementation, and visual appeal. Over 500,000 Euros of prize money will go for the best apps developers. Consumers will also have an opportunity to cast their votes online for their favorite Apps and get a chance to win a LED 9000 TV. Samsung will announce the contest’s winner in February 2011.

In addition, select applications submitted to the Samsung Smart TV Challenge will be made available to Samsung Apps users. Samsung Apps is accessible on all 2010 Samsung Blu-ray players, Blu-ray Home Theater Systems and the majority of HDTVs with screen sizes 32-inches or larger.

In July, Samsung announced the winner of its first Apps Contest which took place in Korea. A lot of family oriented applications were submitted, and many new applications were created for local markets. For example, a multi-language Fairy Tale Book was built to enable viewers to enjoy fairy tale books in various languages via the TV. A TV karaoke application was also created as part of the contest.

Last month, Samsung kicked-off another contest in the United States, drawing strong interest among developers who want to distribute their content on the biggest screen in the home.

European Developer Days

Providing further support for developers, Samsung is hosting a series of European Developer Days, where developers will engage with Samsung to learn about Smart TV, the Samsung Apps platform and the new and updated SDK. In October, European Developer Days will be hosted in France, Germany and the UK. Developers will also be given an opportunity to participate in Q&A sessions with Samsung engineers.

By bringing together the world’s more innovative application developers, boundless opportunities arise to the Samsung Smart TV Challenge, allowing it to become more personal and connected.

In August 31, Samsung hosted its first TV Developer Day in San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley and about 300 developers participated. In the session, Samsung’s Yoon and notable leaders in applications, software and entertainment, including Pandora founder Tim Westergren, Apple co-founder Steven Wozniak, and ESPN Chief Technology Officer Chuck Pagano, discussed the era of Smart TV.
