LG Cuts Nearly Six Million Tons Of Greenhouse Gases In First Half 2010
As part of its “Green 2020” master plan for green growth and sustainable management, LG set a target of reducing emissions by an average of 12 million tons a year by 2012, and by 30 million tons a year by 2020. Altogether, this would mean a cumulative reduction of 200 million tons of greenhouse gases by 2020.
“We’ve committed all our technological and manufacturing know-how to fostering sustainable development and tackling global climate change,” said Dr. Woo-hyun Paik, President and Chief Technology Officer of LG Electronics. “We’ve continually hit and exceeded our goals and we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved so far.”
Through a combination of investing in technologies to reduce factory emissions, streamlining production processes and enhancing the efficiency of its products, LG is far ahead of its target for this year. This will put the company in a very strong position to achieve all the goals of its “Green 2020” plan.
LG achieved the majority of its energy savings this year by improving efficiency in its consumer products. The list of successes runs across all of LG’s companies:
LG’s split-type air conditioners saw 25 percent increase in energy efficiency;
High-efficiency Linear Compressor technology in refrigerators and Direct Drive motor technology in washing machines have resulted in significant cuts in greenhouse gas emissions among LG’s home appliances;
LG has increasingly switched to LED-backlit TVs while also launching a range of low-energy plasma sets, two moves that have further improved efficiency.
In manufacturing, LG cut 110,000 tons of emissions by streamlining its manufacturing processes and enhancing efficiency. LG fitted its air conditioners with inverters and undertook a wider upgrade of its cooling systems, measures that increased energy efficiency by 40 percent and 25 percent, respectively. Following suggestions from employees, LG upgraded its water heating system and temperature sensors, enabling smarter, more precise management of water use during the manufacturing process.
