The 8th Citibank Korea-YWCA Korea Women’s Leadership Awards
– The Award is part of Citibank Korea-YWCA CSR partnership program aimed at recognizing women leaders and promoting women’s leadership

Park Young-Sook, Advisor to the Korea Foundation for Women (KFW), was named the winner of the 8th Women’s Leadership Award for her life-long dedication to the enhancement of women’s human rights. Since her first career in YWCA as a Ehwa Women’s University student, she has held various positions including Chairperson of the Committee on Cheongnyangri Police Student Sexual Harassment; Chairperson of the Committee on Bucheon Police Sex Torture Case; Joint Chairperson of the Committee on Repeal of Pro-Communist Manipulation and Torture; Committee on Reinstatement of Unfairly Fired Women Workers; and Vice Chairman of the Committee on the Revision of the Family Act; all of which were aimed at fighting gender discrimination and promoting justice in our society.
Lee, Ji-Sun who won the Young Leader Prize was acknowledged for her being a role model and a symbol of hope. She suffered from severe burn injuries from a car accident in her early 20s, but did not give up her hope and wrote a best-selling autobiographic essay “Ji-Sun, I love you”
This year’s Special Prize went to the U.S. Ambassador to Korea Kathleen Stevens (Shim Eun-Kyung in Korean name). Her first visit to Korea was paid during her younger days as a member of US Peace Corps when she worked as English teacher. Then, she came to Korea again in 2008, but this time she came as the U.S. Ambassador to Korea. As a first woman Ambassador from the U.S., she demonstrated the importance of the communications between the two countries and committed herself to building a trust and solidarity based on her experience in her youth as well as deep understanding of and affection for the Korean culture.
YWCA Korea and Citibank Korea founded the Korea Women’s Leadership Awards in 2003 to annually acknowledge a woman leader who has made contributions to our society and demonstrated exceptional leadership as well as a young female leader whose leadership is prominent and innovative. And since last year, this renowned award also started to choose a woman who has led diversity initiatives to contribute to the integration of our society.
The winners of the award so far are: Park Dong-Eun, UNICEF Korea Director General; Jeong Gwang-Mo, President of Consumers Union of Korea; Chang Myung-Soo, former President of Hankookilbo Newspaper; Yoon Jung-Ok, Co-Head of Korean Council for the Women drafted for military sexual slavery by Japan; Minister Cho Hwa-Soon of Dalwol Church; Lee In-Bok, Manager of Nazareth Sacred Home; and Whang Youn-Dai, former president of Korea Disabled Peoples’ Development Institute.
Young Leader Winners include: Kim Ki-Hye, Head of Susunhwa house; Han Bi-Ya, World Vision Emergency Relief Team Leader; Kim Sung-Joo, CEO of Sungjoo International; Kim Young-Mi, freelance producer; Bang Gui-Hee Sotdae Literature publisher; Lee So-Yeon, Korea’s first astronaut; and Lim O-Kyeong, Coach of Seoul City Hall Women Handball Team.
The first Special Prize winner last year was Molly Holt, head of Holt Children’s Services.
The award ceremony is to be held at 2pm on Thursday, November 4, at the 2F, international conference room at Korea Federation of Banks Building.
