DHL official logistics partner of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig

- Transport of musical instruments during this year's tour in Europe and Asia

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, will once again be in charge of the safe and smooth transportation of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra’s more than 100 musical instruments during the orchestra’s concert tours to Asia including Korea and across Europe in 2011. The cargo is worth several million Euros, consists of sensitive and unique instruments.

As the official logistics partner of the Gewandhaus Orchestra DHL uses air-suspended vehicles and temperature-monitoring systems, among other things, to assure safe transport. The world’s largest professional orchestra will give guest performances in Asia from 4 to 21 March and in various European cities from September to December. As part of the Orchestra’s Asian tour, Gewandhaus Orchestra will perform Dvorak’s symphony No.7 and Bruckner’s symphony No.8 at Seoul art centre on March 7 and 8, respectively.

“To make every concert a success, it is crucial to ensure safe transportation and meet the tight schedule. The planning of a complete concert tour starts up to one and a half years in advance of the opening concert,” explains Wolfgang Giehl, Head of Corporate Brand Marketing, Deutsche Post DHL.

The total cargo weight is 6,000 kg with a volume of approximately 60 m3. Apart from 500 g light triangles and kettledrums weighing 133 kg, DHL also transports music stands, sheet music, the conductor’s rostrum and the musicians’ wardrobes. Since the instruments are very sensitive and can be damaged easily, DHL ensures that the temperature level is continuously controlled and documented during transport. The position of the transport vehicles is continuously monitored by GPS. DHL also takes care of all customs formalities along the way.

“DHL is a reliable partner, whose experience and know-how has always ensured smooth tours in the past. This year again, we are embarking on our tour feeling confident and concentrating entirely on our music,“ says Professor Andreas Schulz, Director of the Gewandhaus.

Logistics partnership

DHL has been the official logistics partner of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra since February 2009. The logistics company supports the Orchestra’s concert tours in Europe and to Asia and the USA by handling the transports of their complete equipment and taking care of customs clearance. DHL has already been providing logistics services of this kind for the Leipzig star orchestra since 2005.

One of the greatest challenges is the tight schedule to be met. In addition, the instruments must be kept at a constant temperature of 18 to 20°C to avoid cracks caused by major variations in temperature. A temperature recorder in the truck monitors the temperature in the container throughout the entire transport. Air-conditioning ensures temperature requirements are met aboard the plane. GPS monitoring enables DHL to establish the position of vehicles at any time (Track &Trace). All the vehicles used for transport must be equipped with air suspension.

The planning of a complete concert tour starts 1 to 1,5 years in advance of the tour. If an instrument must be delivered to Asia within a day, for example, DHL is able to handle this.

Transported goods

The Gewandhaus Orchestra’s instruments are very old and unique und hence very valuable and virtually irreplaceable. In fact, they are one-of-a-kind objects. The scope of musical instruments ranges from kettledrums weighing up to 133 kg to cellos and violins, trombones, clarinets and trumpets. The complete shipment for one transport consists of 104 packages. In addition to the instruments, DHL transports further equipment, such as the conductor’s rostrum, stools, music stands as well as the sheet music, the wardrobe of the musicians and the conductor’s baton.

- 130 individual instruments
- 104 trading units/ packages with a capacity of 59 cubic meters
- Ca. 6000 kg in total (Individual items: from 500 g (triangle) to 133 kg (kettledrum))
- Value: Total shipment: more than EUR 2 million

Mode of transport/packaging
Transport by truck and air. The Orchestra has special transport boxes for their instruments. DHL takes care to store these boxes safely and uses temperature-controlled box trucks for transport.
