The Seoul Mayor Lee, Myung-Bak Climbs the Wall While Visitng
It was a successful day for Korea. After preliminary rounds today at the Asian X Games, five Koreans will have the chance to take home X Games medals as they advanced to tomorrow’s finals. Competition has brought more than 8300 action sports fans out to Jamsil Gymnasium over the last two days for the event. From May 26-29, athletes will compete in Aggressive In-line, Skateboard, Freestyle BMX, Sport Climbing and Wakeboard. In addition, three Moto X athletes will put on a demo for the people of Seoul. Admission to the event is free.
Skateboard
Last night in the vert prelims, USA’s Neal Hendrix and Brazil’s Sandro Dias duked it out for the number one seed with little room between each other. Hendrix pulled away and took the number one spot going into today’s final. Sandro Dias did not let him keep that as he ran away with the gold today with huge airs. Both runs Dias stayed on his board the entire time. Known for taking many attempts at the 900 in contests, the people of Seoul did not let Sandro stop until he landed it at this one. Six attempts after the buzzer, and Sandro Dias did it again. “I can’t tell you how happy I am,” Dias said about his win and 900. Looking into the crowd, Dias shouted, “You all helped me land that. I love you guys.” Hendrix left with the bronze while Australia’s Renton Millar took silver.
Tonight the park preliminaries took place with three heats of thirty skaters trying to make their way into Sunday’s final. Five Koreans faced eleven other countries for the spots to the final. It was a tough competition with twenty skaters having to go home. All five Koreans were in the top eighteen, but missed the finals by mere points. The day and the course belonged to longtime skater, Chris Senn, who skated his usual, original style to take a huge lead with his first run. For the finals tomorrow, there is nearly a different country for every skater. Ten skaters will vie for the gold from USA, Thailand, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, United Arab Emirate and Indonesia.
BMX Freestyle
Friday’s park preliminaries belonged to Australia’s Ryan Guettler and nothing changed going into tonight’s final. Guettler owned the course and landed nearly everything he attempted, particularly the 720 over the boxjump. Fellow Aussies, Luke Fink and Colin Mackay both attempted the 720 to no avail, but left the Asian X Games with a silver and a bronze, respectively. “It is nice to now round out my collection of Asian X Games medals,” Guettler said of his gold who collected the bronze in 2003 and a silver just last year. After the contest was finished, Guettler and Mackay put on an impromptu demo for the fans in the stands.
Today in the flatland final, yesterday’s preliminaries Terry Adams of USA maintained his number one spot with originality and an overall degree of difficulty in both of his runs. Fellow USA riders, Justin Miller and Matt Wilhelm rounded out the podium, respectively, with Justin only a slight three-tenths of a point behind the leader and Wilhelm’s famous high-speed spinning tricks to give him the bronze.
Sport Climbing
Yesterday the men competed in the semi-finals, but today belonged to the women. It really belonged to the Korean women as three of the ten will advance to Sunday’s final. Current National Champion and last year’s silver medalist at Asian X Games, Ja-In Kim, led the pack and landed in the first place seed for tomorrow. “I am very pleased that the X Games have come to Korea. I feel comfortable in this environment, and it makes it easier to compete,” Kim said about Asian X Games in Seoul. Closely at Kim’s heels is Australia favorite, Samantha Berry who finished in second for tomorrow’s final.
Wakeboard
Round two started today with fifteen competitors trying to make the cut to the ten-man final. Only two riders from each of the three heats advanced today. The final was dominated by Australia where last night’s leader after round one, Josh Sanders, kept his position with the biggest whirly-bird of the contest and took home gold. Closely behind was Australia’s Dean Smith and rounding out the top three was crowd pleaser and Thailand’s top wakeboarder Bunyalo Kuakoonrat.
Aggressive In-line
Today the vert preliminaries began with a very diverse group of athletes. With thirteen athletes from six different countries on the ramp, the competition was exciting and full of great talent from all over the world. Korea was cheering for their very own Myung-Ryul Lee who just barely missed the finals. Brazil’s Marco Di Santi soared high above the ramp and the other competitors for a strong lead going into tomorrow’s final.
Moto X
The team of Jeremy Carter, Jesse Olson and Niki Danielson might have even had more fun than the spectators at Jamsil Gymnasium. Today in several demos, one particularly for the Mayor of Seoul, the athletes threw down every trick they knew to wow the crowds. Later in the day, the three moto guys were seen signing autographs at the ESPN booth for a long line of fans.
