SEOUL--(Korea Newswire)--The 6th Citi-KyungHee Univ. NGO Internship Program ended with the course completion ceremony and evaluation sessions at the boardroom on the 2nd fl. of KyungHee Univ. main bldg. The two-month program is aimed at driving the development of Korean society and fostering young talents who will lead the next-generation NGOs. The internship program of this round sponsored by Citibank Korea Inc. (CEO Ha, Yung-ku) and hosted by KyungHee Univ. Graduate School of Public Policy & Civic Engagement (President Lee, Dong-su) ran at 71 major civic organizations located in major provinces and cities across the country from Dec. 26, 2011 to Feb. 17, 2012, and 100 university and graduate school students who aspired to develop their career at NGOs joined this meaningful initiative.

A survey done after the course was completed showed 81% of the participating students were highly satisfied with the program, and 80% of the respondents answered it was an opportunity to enhance their awareness about Korean society in general and NGOs. Furthermore, 93% of the students said they were willing to continue the relationship with the NGOs that they worked for and participate in the volunteer activities going forward. Around 99% of the NGOs also positively assessed the participating students’ contribution to the organizations, and 68% of them answered the enthusiastic attitude and great competency of the students gave them the actual help they needed for implementing new projects or getting jobs done.

Kwon, You-kyung (junior of Ewha Women’s Univ.) having completed the internship at ‘People Building a Good World,’ an NGO supporting women, said, “I felt so good to see people advocating for human rights and materializing the values of public good as NGO members in this capitalistic society where the value of human being and labor is determined only by efficiency and marketability.” Lee, Kwang-jae, president of the Korea Manifesto Center, one of the joining organizations, also said, “The participants were not merely interns. They completed the jobs on their own as members of the organizations and our society, and we’ve reaped huge tangible results through the program.”

While the program was operated, advisors and responsible officers visited the 71 organizations where the interns belonged to have interview with the organization staff and the students. Employees of Citibank Korea also participated as volunteer mentors and visited Habitat for Humanity Korea, Team&Team, and Joyful Union to give encouraging words to the interns. In Jan., the participants of the 6th Citi-KyungHee Univ. Internship Program had the “Sharing Day” event and joined volunteer activities like house maintenance, food delivery, and afterschool care of the children from low-income families.
