Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--Around 50 young people aged 15-24 from four countries in Northeast Asia will gather in Seoul, Korea for the first ever TUNZA North East Asia Youth Environment Network (TUNZA-NEAYEN) Conference, from 9 to 12 August 2005.

The participants, who come from China, Japan, Mongolia, and Korea, will discuss issues of poverty, gender equality, environmental sustainability and global partnership, as outlined by Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 1, 3, 7 and 8.

The Conference is part of the United Nations Environment Programme's TUNZA programme for children and youth. 'Tunza' means to treat with care and affection in Kiswahili and it is a wide-ranging programme to involve children and young people in environmental issues.

The Conference comes only several weeks before the 2005 World Summit in New York, at which world leaders will discuss progress in meeting the MDGs, as well as the reform of the UN system. The young delegates will concentrate on cross-cutting issues and discuss how they as youth can contribute in their own countries towards the achievement of the MDGs.

TUNZA-NEAYEN was launched in January 2005, in close collaboration with national focal points in China, Japan and Mongolia, to bring together local grass-roots youth environmental organizations. Its aim is to boost youth participation in the implementation processes of environmental challenges by sharing best practices and networking within the framework of Sub-regional Youth Environment Networks in the UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP). The Regional Director of ROAP, who will be a chief guest at the Opening Ceremony of the Conference, has said that youth are an important civil stakeholder group and should be included in dialogue on sustainable development.

Participants were selected from TUNZA-NEAYEN member organizations in the individual countries, based on their involvement in environmental activities in their communities. The three-day programme includes presentations, thematic workshops, and field excursions. At the end of the Conference, four youth leaders will be selected from each country to express the sub-regional perspective and represent the outcomes of the 1st TUNZA-NEAYEN Conference at the TUNZA International Youth Conference, which is being held in October in Bangalore, India.

The Conference is hosted by the TUNZA-NEAYEN Steering Committee and organized by the UNEP National Committee for the Republic of Korea. It is supported by the UNEP Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Seoul Metropolitan City and the Ministry of Environment of Republic of Korea, and sponsored by Bayer AG.
