Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--South Koreans’ salt intake is still too high despite their growing interest in healthy diets, the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said on Tuesday (Aug. 16).

The administration warned against excessive sodium consumption, saying that it is much higher than the internationally recommended level.

The KFDA’s estimation showed that Koreans eat 4,900 milligrams of sodium on average every day, 2.45 times the recommended level of 2,000 milligrams set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the WHO, sodium or natrium is necessary to maintain the body’s fluid balance but excessive intake could damage the kidneys and increase the risk of high blood pressure.
