The program that has lasted for two months is aimed at promoting the development of civic society and nurturing the young leaders who will head NGOs in the future.

The NGO internship program was participated by 100 undergraduate students who wanted to accumulate experiences or develop their career in NGOs. They came from 45 prestigious universities in and outside the country like Yonsei University, Korea University, or Brown University and Tufts University. The applicants served internship in 75 major civic organizations located in provinces and cities across the nation from Dec. 23, 2013 to Feb. 14, 2014. Furthermore, 89% of the responding students expressed their intention to maintain the relationship with the NGOs where they worked and to join volunteer activities even after the program officially ended. On the other hand, 98% of the NGOs also evaluated the attitude and contributions of the internship participants very positively, and they were especially happy as they suffered lack of human resource and desperately needed such support.

“Before joining the internship, I was a frog in the well knowing nothing of the great ocean, and I always worried about grade, specification, and certificates. But, now I can the ocean from a broader perspective.” said Cho, Hong-geun (sophomore, Hanyang Univ.) after finishing the ceremony. Shin, Mi-ae, head of Seoul Briquette Bank under the Babsang Community Welfare Foundation, one of the NGOs joined the program said, “The interns have become very useful resource pool as they’ve come back to us to join the volunteer activities on a regular basis even after they completed the internship, and we rely really much on the internship workers as they have such sincere attitude and contribute to the organization hugely,” expressing great satisfaction with the interns that she worked with.

While the program was run, the advisory board members and hands-on staff visited 75 NGOs where the interns were serving and met relevant officers and internship members. From CKI, around 50 executives or employees volunteered as mentors and made a visit to around 50 organizations like Loving Concern International, Citizens’ Action Network, and Korea Manifesto Center and gave encouraging words to the interns. On Jan. 27, the undergraduates and graduates who were part of the 8th Citi - KyungHee Univ.
