건국대 학원창립 83주년 기념식 열어

송희영 건국대 총장은 “건국대학교는 1931년 ‘사회영 중앙실비진료원’의 개원과 함께 상허선생께서 인술보국·의료제민의 첫발을 내디딘 이래 1946년 조선정치학관의 설립을 거쳐, 개교 68주년이자 학원창립 83주년이 되는 뜻 깊은 날을 맞았다”며 “오늘의 이 시간을 새로운 도약과 발전의 계기로 삼자”고 말했다. 송 총장은 “건국대는 국가와 민족에게 이익을 줄 수 있고, 신뢰를 받을 수 있는 충실한 일꾼, 성·신·의를 통한 중후하고 침착한 인간성의 육성과 기술교육을 통해 ‘민중 속에서’ ‘민중을 위해’ ‘민중을 이끌고 나갈’ 수 있는 인재 육성을 설립이념이자 교육목표로 하고 있다”며 “개교 70주년이 되는 2년 후의 오늘, 더 큰 보람과 성취의 기쁨을 나눌 수 있도록 신발 끈을 동여매자”고 당부했다.
이어 2006년 노벨 화학상 수상자이자 건국대 석학교수인 로저 콘버그(Roger Kornberg) 미 스탠퍼드대 교수가 축사를 했다. 콘버그 교수는 축사에서 “성·신·의의 교시 위에 창립된 건국대는 현재 한국에서 가장 명망 있는 사립대 가운데 하나로 우뚝 섰다(Konkuk University was founded on the principles of ‘Seong(Truth)’, ‘Shin(Faith)’, and ‘Eui(Righteousness)’. Konkuk University has become the most prestigious private university in Korea.)”며 “미래에 건국대학교는 더욱 더 강하게 발전할 것(Looking to the future, I expect Konkuk University to go from strength to strength.)”이라고 말했다.
콘버그 교수는 건국대의 발전에 대한 조언으로 ‘기초학문’과 ‘기초연구’에 대한 관심과 투자(to pay attention to fundamentals)를 강조했다. 콘버그 교수는 “건국대학교는 이미 응용과학 분야에 타 학교와 비교하지 못할 만큼의 강점들을 가지고 있다”며 “이 훌륭한 응용과학 분야를 뒷받침할 수 있는 기초과학을 더 키울 것(emphasize basic science alongside the extraordinary capabilities already existing in the university in applied science)”을 조언했다.
이날 행사에서는 학술상·연구공로상·교육상, 건국 목련상, 직원 모범상, 근속상 시상도 진행됐다.
학술상은 서울캠퍼스 4명, 글로컬캠퍼스 2명 등 총 6명이 수상했으며, 연구공로상은 서울캠퍼스 2명, 글로컬캠퍼스 1명 등 총 3명이 수상했다. 교육상은 서울캠퍼스 2명이 수상했다.
건국 목련상은 선행부문 2명, 봉사부문 7명 등 총 9명이 수상했으며, 직원 모범상은 법인직원과 대학직원 총 9명이 수상했다.
이밖에 장기근속상(30년, 20년)을 각각 교수 16명과 직원 23명, 법인 산하기관 39명 등 총 78명에게 수여했다.

Looking to the future, I expect Konkuk University to go from strength to strength. I believe the university stands on the threshold of greatness.
If I may make a recommendation for the future direction of the university, it is to pay attention to fundamentals, to emphasize basic science alongside the extraordinary capabilities already existing in the university in applied science. Fundamental studies have a multiplier effect. For example, at Stanford University, where I have been a professor for many years, there were only 43 members of the medical faculty for much of the time. Because these few faculty focused on basic research, inventing genetic engineering, the fluorescence-activated cell sorter, and so on, the medical school enjoyed an international reputation far larger than its small size. Konkuk University, with its superb faculty, can accomplish the same and more.
Finally, I must convey my personal gratitude for the privilege of participating in the growth and development of Konkuk University during the past 7 years. I have greatly enjoyed my membership in the Konkuk Family. I have been very impressed by the skill and dedication of the faculty, students, and staff of the university. I have been very appreciative of their kindness to me during my many visits. I wish them all continued success, happiness, and personal fulfillment.
