South-South Cooperation to Improve Diabetes Care
With the support of the IDF BRIDGES programme, three centres in the selected countries, will benefit from the partnership:
-Qingdao Endocrine and Diabetes Hospital, Qingdao (China)
-Zimbabwe Diabetes Association, Harare (Zimbabwe)
-Ambulatory healthcare center “CAA Cotocollao”; Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Ecuador, Quito (Ecuador)
Prior to the start of the intervention, local teams in these centres have been trained during workshops organized by Professor Samir Khalil, principal investigator of the original project in Egypt and IDF. These four day workshops strengthened the intervention and ensured the success of its implementation.
“We are building bridges between scientists and diabetes communities worldwide through a unique South-South cooperation” said Professor Linda Siminerio, Chair of the BRIDGES Executive Committee. “With over 80% of the people living with diabetes in low and middle income countries, the transfer of knowledge and expertise between these regions is key to tackle the diabetes epidemic and reduce complications”.
“After successful results in Egypt, we are excited to share our foot care project with the rest of the world” stated Professor Samir Helmy Assaad Khalil. “In less than two years in Egypt, we managed to educate more than 2,700 professionals nationwide. Almost all universities now have a module on diabetes foot care included in their graduate and post graduate curriculum”.
