Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The 2005 APEC Anti-Corruption & Transparency Symposium, the first APEC meeting of its kind to be hosted by the Korea Independent Commission Against Corruption (KICAC), will be held on September 1 - 2 at Sheraton Grande Walkerhill in Seoul.

Around 350 delegates and experts from 25 APEC member economies and international organizations are expected to take part in the anti-corruption symposium. Among the participants are Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan, Justice Minister of Chile Luis Bates and Secretary General of the European Anti-Fraud Office Franz-Hermann Brüner.

The symposium will commence with an opening ceremony where Chairman of KICAC Chung Soung-jin gives a welcoming speech. It will be followed by four plenary sessions and two workshops, featuring case presentations, speeches and discussions from APEC representatives and experts.

On the first day, participants will share ideas and experience on global and APEC anti-corruption strategies, capacity-building measures to implement anti-corruption policies, and APEC initiatives on denial of safe haven, asset recovery and extradition.

On the following day, “cooperation among different sectors in society” will be a major theme for the morning plenary session. At the afternoon workshops, speakers and panelists will likely underscore the need for the use of information technology for ensuring transparency and explore various avenues to eliminate bribery in business transactions.

The symposium was designed to review anti-corruption efforts in connection with the APEC Commitment and Course of Action on Fighting Corruption and Ensuring Transparency, which were endorsed by APEC leaders in November 2004.

The symposium will be followed by the APEC Anti-Corruption & Transparency Task Force Meeting in Gyeong-ju on September 5 - 6, which is chaired by Kim Sung-ho, the Secretary General of KICAC. It will be another important opportunity for APEC senior officials to discuss the implementation of the UN Convention Against Corruption, the capacity-building of APEC member economies in the combat against corruption, promotion of public and private partnership, etc. In particular, a summary of the results of the Seoul symposium will be announced at the task force meeting.

The two anti-corruption meetings will provide Korea with wonderful opportunities to promote its commitment to fighting corruption and help build a momentum to increase voluntary efforts against corruption the world over.
