9th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival Opens Today…Launching 8-Day Documentary Festival

It presents 114 captivating and novel documentary films from 42 countries.

The opening ceremony of the 9th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival is held on September 21, 2017 at Camp Greaves.

CAMP GREAVES, PAJU--(Korea Newswire)--9th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival featuring 114 documentary films from 42 different countries kicks off today on September 21 with its opening ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The opening ceremony of the 9th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival (Chairman of Organizing Committee: Nam Kyung-pil; Chairman of Executive Committee: Cho Jae-hyun) is going to be held on September 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Camp Greaves in Paju.

The ceremony will be moderated by popular Broadcaster Ryu Si-Hyun and Actor Kwon Yul. More than 600 persons, including Lee Jae-yul, Vice Governor of Gyeonggi-do Province; Cho Jae-hyun, Chairman of Executive Committee of the Festival; Actor Cho Jin-woong and Actress Jiyoo, honorary ambassadors; film-related persons, invited guests and audience will be attended. Attendees will also include 26 directors and casts of documentary films.

Programs of the opening ceremony will include a concert by an independent band of actors and film-makers, ‘Ggamjang Gomushin’, and screening of the opening film ‘Old Marine Boy’ directed by Jin Mo-young as the world premiere.

Since it was launched in 2009, the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival that combines the DMZ located in the world’s sole divided nation with documentary films is growing as an arena of documentary film festival that delivers the value of ‘peace, communication and life’.

As it will be held at Camp Greaves, which had been used by a U.S. Army corps being located in the civilian access control line, the opening ceremony is the only event that can be enjoyed in the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival. After the opening ceremony, audience can take part in the 1 night/2 day-stay DMZ tour.

‘Old Marine Boy’, which is selected as the opening film of the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival this year, attracts keen attention. It is a new work produced by Director Jin Mo-young in three years after directing ‘My Love, Don’t Cross That River’ which broke the documentary film box-office record in Korea by attracting an audience of more than 4.8 million in 2014. Featuring the life of a diver who defected from North Korea with his family, the film focuses on the eye view of a ‘father’ rather than that of a ‘North Korean defector’. The new film produced by Director Jin Mo-young who demonstrated a new potential of documentary genre with touching humanity arouses interest how it will captivate the audience.

The concert by an independent band of actors and film-makers, ‘Ggamjang Gomushin’, to be performed at the opening ceremony of the DMZ Docs will be joined by Actor Kim Jae-rok and celebrated documentary film director Kim Dong-won. And Director Kim Dong-won’s new film ‘Jung Il-Woo, My Friend’ and ‘The 6 Days Struggle at the Myong-Dong Cathedral’ produced in 1999 will also be screened during the Festival this year.

Scenes of the opening ceremony and congratulatory performances will be webcasted in real time via LTE network in most regions of Gyeonggi-do and Seoul. Starting at 6:00 p.m. of September 21, congratulatory performances will be held simultaneously at Ilsan Culture Park by a folk band ‘Yeonnamdong Dumb & Dumber’, at Sinchon U-plex Plaza by a popular experimental folk group ‘Danpyunsun’, and at outdoor square of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts by a 21st century populace entertainer ‘Yamagata Tweakster’.

The film festival will add abundance by a variety of affiliated events, such as forums, lectures and talk shows to be held during the period.

Forums are organized that deal with the ‘The Filmic Story of Life’ that introspects and shares life of old age by combining oral history and production process of documentary films, in-depth topics related with North Korea, present reality of independent producers, and personal documentary, a new trend of documentary film. And the program will provide lectures that explain various social issues, such as feminism and politics, as well as talk shows that help audience understand documentary films more deeply.

Audience can freely enjoy music and have chances of being invited to film screening at the event of ‘DMZ Buskers’ that will be held at the outdoor square of Mega Box Baekseok at 14:00 ~17:00 p.m. every day from September 22 through 25.

The 9th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival will be held on September 21~28, 2017 in Goyang (Mega Box Baekseok), Paju (Mega Box in Paju Book City), Gimpo (Gimpo Art Hall), and Yeoncheon (Sureul Art Hall in Yeoncheon). The Festival is designed to widely apprise of attraction of documentary films that deliver impressive emotion with the power of truth.
