With more than 35 years of practiced clinical experience, Dr. Kyu Hyung Ryu most recently served as the director of the Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital from 2015 to 2018, having been director of its Cardiovascular Center from 2012 to 2015. Prior to obtaining these illustrious roles, he held a number of positions with Konkuk University College of Medicine and Konkuk University Hospital, including professor of cardiovascular medicine from 2005 to 2012, director of the Cardiovascular Center from 2005 to 2009, and chair of internal medicine from 2005 to 2008. From 2002 to 2005, Dr. Ryu was a professor of cardiology at Hallym University College Sacred Heart Hospital, having been an associate professor from 1997 to 2002, assistant professor from 1992 to 1997, and lecturer from 1989 to 1992.

Dr. Kyu Hyung Ryu commenced his career as a student at Seoul National University Medical School, obtaining a Doctor of Medicine in 1981. He continued his studies with the school, serving in an internship and residency from 1981 to 1985, and completing a Master of Medicine in 1989. He concluded his education in 1992, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in medicine with the school. Dr. Ryu is a licensed physician, a certified internal medicine specialist, and a subdivision specialist of adult cardiology. He has been recognized as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology Foundation.

Alongside his primary career endeavors, Dr. Ryu has been a pioneer in the study of heart failure in Korea and leading the Heart Failure Research Group since 1986. Dr. Ryu and his colleagues opened the Korea Heart Failure Research working group for the first time in 2003. Now the Korean Heart Failure Society was established in March, 2018. In particular, Dr. Ryu published many clinical research papers as a researcher in charge of the Korea multicenter HR study (1998 ~ 2003) and KorHF (Korea Heart Failure registry, 2004 ~ 2009). The 5th Asia Pacific Congress of Heart Failure in 2010 was attracted hosting and served as secretary general. Also, hypertension research has been led by the working group for hypertensive target organ damage of the Korean Society of Hypertension and Dr. Ryu has been the chief researcher of KorHR (Korean Registry of Target Organ Damages in Hypertension). Many abstracts were presented in The ISH2016 (International Society of Hypertension, Seoul 2016).

Dr. Ryu served as editor in chief of the Journals of the Korean Society of Cardiology (KSC) and the Korean Society of Hypertension (KSH). Hypertension textbooks and heart failure and arrhythmia menu were published. Likewise, he has been the president of the Working Group of Target Organ Damage in Hypertension with KSH since 2009, a committee member of KSC and KSH since 2002, and former president of the Korean Society of Heart Failure from 2009 to 2011.
