With nearly 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Jira was a department director at Wacker-Chemie GmbH, now Wacker Chemie AG, from 1990 to 1993. Prior to obtaining this role, he was a research manager with the company from 1979 to 1990, simultaneously serving as manager of the Burghausen factory. Earlier in his career, Dr. Jira was a research coordinator with the company from 1969 to 1979 and a research chemist from 1955 to 1969. During his tenure with Wacker, he and his fellow researchers developed a production process to obtain the starting material acetaldehyde on the basis of ethylene, a petrochemical raw material, which set the standard for chemical processes for years to come.

Dr. Jira began his career as a student at the Technical University of Munich, obtaining a diploma in chemistry in 1952. He continued his studies with the school, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in 1955. Since then, he has authored myriad publications within his areas of expertise, most recently including “Acetaldehyde from Ethylene and Related Wacker-Type Reactions” through John Wiley & Sons, Inc., in 2016.

Throughout his career, Dr. Jira has been recognized for his contributions. He was the recipient of the Karl Ziegler Prize from the Karl Ziegler Foundation in 1981, the Dechema Prize in 1962, and the Fiftieth Anniversary Prize from the Industrial Chemical Society in 1968. He has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who’s Who in Science and Engineering.
