APEC CEO Summit은 매년 APEC 정상회의 기간중 아시아·태평양 지역의 대표적인 기업인들이 참가하는 역내 최대의 기업인 포럼으로 세계 정치·경제 안정화 및 공동 번영 방안에 대한 다양한 주제 발표와 토론이 이루어지는 화합의 場이다.
특히, 이번 CEO Summit에는 역대 최대 규모인 800여 명의 글로벌 경제인들이 참석하여 ‘기업가 정신과 번영?아시아·태평양 지역의 성공적인 파트너십 구축’(Entrepreneurship and Prosperity:Building a Successful Partnership in the Asia-Pacific Region)의 주제 아래 서로의 의견을 교환할 예정이다.

Good afternoon.
It is my great honor to have the opportunity to speak in front of such esteemed leaders of respective Economies and global enterprises representing the Asia Pacific region.
Ever since its launch in 1989, APEC has evolved into the world’s largest regional economic cooperation entity, accounting for 57% and 45.8% of the world’s GDP and trade respectively. As the number shows, the member economies of APEC have achieved remarkable results.
Even under such achievements, the rapid digitalization of the global economy and the phenomenal rise of the Chinese economy are leading to demands for qualitative change in economic cooperation in the region.
Based on this view, I strongly believe that regional cooperation in the information and telecommunications industry is pivotal. In this era of digitalization, it is an area that creates more epochal added value to related industries than any other.
With this belief, I would like to express my thoughts on how cooperation between China and Korea in the IT industry can contribute to the advancement of the APEC community.
As the CEO of the company first to commercialize CDMA technology in this world, I would like to share with you the experience in Korea.
The IT industry has positioned itself as the growth engine of the Korean economy, and the battery that powers this engine is the mobile telecommunications industry.
The IT industry has shown strong growth, with IT exports reaching 74.3 billion US dollars in 2004, which accounted for 29.2% of the total export that amounted to 254.2 billion US dollars.
Taking a closer look, the world’s first commercialization of CDMA technology in 1996 ignited the growth in the mobile telecommunications industry in Korea, leading to co-development in related industries.
Statistics show that CDMA technology contributed over 113 billion US dollars to the Korean economy leading up to 2001.
The growth in the mobile telecommunications industry not only contributed to the national economy, but also played an important role in the regional economy. With SK Telecom leading the way, Korean telecommunications operators have eagerly shared their know-how in CDMA technology with major overseas operators, contributing to the improvement of telecommunications service level in the region.
Also, the high-tech information and telecommunications infrastructure set up in Korea has provided a test bed for companies within the region.
The IT industry takes on an important role in the Korean economy. This importance is also replicated in China. Through the strong drive initiated by the Chinese government, China is expected to become one of the top three IT powerhouses in the global arena, with the IT industry expected to reach 47.2 billion US dollars in size by the year 2007.
Among the various sectors within the IT industry, the outlook for the mobile telecommunications service market is very bright. Korea’s mobile telecom service market has achieved remarkable growth and has presented itself as a new growth model for prominent global companies.
Likewise, China’s mobile telecom service market displays an annual average growth rate nearing 30%, and is the world’s largest market with 340 million subscribers as of year end 2004.
The world is continually astonished by the surge in competitiveness of the IT industry in China. The addition of competition oriented, open-minded policies to this competitiveness will act as a catalyst for China in becoming a global IT leader.
For this purpose, if the two countries cooperate in the development of next generation technology and the co-building of test beds, we will be able to lead new technology standards and successfully co-create new markets such as satellite DMB, home network and the next generation of innovative contents. This will not only lead to the development of industries directly linked to the telecom industry, but also strengthen the competitiveness of other industries within the region.
The theme of this year’s APEC Summit is “Towards One Community: Meet the Challenge, Make the Change”. SK Telecom, along with other Korean companies, will prudently meet the challenge and make the change brought on by the economic growth and development of information and telecommunications industry in China, in cooperation with the various economic entities of APEC for a prosperous future.
