PyeongChang--(뉴스와이어)--A Korean sports media consortium recognized Kim Jin Sun, the executive president of the 2014 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games Bid Committee and governor of Gangwon Province, for his commitment to strengthening and globalizing sport in Korea.

The Korea Sports Press Union, a 300-member organization made of 21 major Korean sports media, awarded Gov. Kim its 2005 Distinguished Service Award at the ceremony on November 30th in Olympic Parktel in Seoul in which honors were given in a number of categories including Athlete of the Year and Academic Award.

Park Kun Man, the president of the press group, praised Kim by saying, “Gangwon Province has made exceptional efforts to promote winter sports. Moreover, they are now pouring all of their efforts and passion toward succeeding at hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics. We have chosen Kim Jin Sun Korea Sports Grand Prix award, for we have highly appraised his efforts.”

Meanwhile, as its Athlete of the Year, the press group recognized the swimmer Park Tae Hwan. The 16-year-old notched a new Asia-wide record of 15:00:32 for the 1,500-meter men’s freestyle event at the 4th East Asian Games in Macau, which wrapped up in early November. Park surpassed the previous Asian record for this event by more than 9 seconds.

In addition, the Korea Sports Press Union bestowed its Academic Award to Kim Yang Jong, president of Suwon College.

Founded in 1985 to promote the prosperity of Korean sports, the Korea Sports Press Union established its annual “Korea Sports Award” program in 1996 to honor individuals who played an important role in national sports development during that year.

Among the many leaders of the Korean sports community recognized over the years was Chung Mong Gu, chairman of Hyundai Motor. Lee Kun Hee, the chairman of Samsung Group, was the group’s first awardees.
