Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--President Roh Moo-hyun met this afternoon with five members of U.S. Congress including Congressman Henry Hyde (R-Illibnois, serving the 16th term), Chairman of the House International Relations Committee, and exchanged views on matters of common interest including Korea-U.S. relations, the North Korea nuclear program, and the visa waiver program.

President Roh and Congressman Hyde valued that Korea-U.S. alliance is maintained solid and shared an understanding that there is no problem the two long-standing friends of Korea and U.S. cannot solve if we continue to undertake with goodwill, friendship and patience some of the issues including readjustment of alliance.

In addition, President Roh and Congressman Hyde agreed that it is important to eliminate distrust through dialogue for building trust and that Korea and the U.S. should continue to closely consult with each other about various measures to resolve North Korea's nuclear program.

Meanwhile, the Congressional delegation explained that the U.S. air forces stationed in Korea is faced with a difficulty that they have to train outside of Korea due to the shortage of shooting drill ranges and recommended that the Korean government make efforts to resolve this problem. President Roh stated that, while we are faced with problems of our own, he will make efforts to help resolve it in a speedy manner.

With regard to the inclusion (of Korea) in the visa waiver program, Congressman Hyde noted that the sentiment within Congress is quite favorable to the designation of Korea as a visa waver nation, adding that he positively supports it himself.

In addition, Congressman Hyde noted that a second-generation Korean American student Lee Mi-han (Maryland) won an essay contest in commemoration of the opening of the Lincoln Museum located in his Congressional district of Springfield, Illinois. He also appreciated the role of Koreans contributing to the U.S. society.

At today's meeting, Congresswoman Dana Rohrabacher (R-California, 9th term), Congressman Eni Faleomavaega (D-American Samoa, 9th term), Congressman Melvin Watt (D-North Carolina, 7th term), Congressman Jeff Flake (R-Arizona, 3rd term), and U.S. Ambassador to Korea Vershbow were also present.
