Lee, Medvedev agree on closer cooperation in energy, rail link

Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--The Presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said on Wednesday (July 9) that South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev agreed on closer cooperation in the energy and resources sector and in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula during their summit talks held on the sidelines of the Group of Eight summit.

Lee and his Russian counterpart also agreed to push ahead with the two countries' efforts to link the trans-Korean railway with Russia's trans-Siberian railway and with other tripartite economic cooperation projects involving North Korea in Siberia, according to Cheong Wa Dae.

In a press release, Cheong Wa Dae said that President Lee and Medvedev shared the view that Korea and Russia have deepened their partnership in politics, economy and other fields, as seen in Russia's recent cooperation in sending the first South Korean astronaut to space aboard a Russian spacecraft.

The two leaders also discussed ways to expand practical bilateral cooperation, including joint development of energy in the Far Eastern and Siberian regions and supply of Russian natural gas to South Korea via North Korea," Cheong Wa Dae added.
