Korea-El Salvador summit stresses economic collaboration
The two leaders highly praised the steady development of the bilateral relationship in various areas since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1962. They agreed to make greater efforts to further expand friendly ties between the two countries on the occasion of President Saca's current visit.
They concurred that Korea and El Salvador should bolster trade and investments substantially, taking advantage of El Salvador's improved economic environment. Salvadoran economy is expected to benefit from the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA), which was signed between the United States and six Central American countries and took effect last March. In connection with the bilateral cooperation, the Korean President asked the Salvadoran President to provide support for Korean enterprises hoping to enter the region for power and road projects. President Roh also asked President Saca to facilitate visa issuance for Koreans as a means of expanding investment.
The two leaders saw eye to eye on the need to further strengthen collaboration for the development of the IT industry in El Salvador. To this end, they agreed to extend the memorandum of understanding for IT cooperation signed between the two countries in September 2005.
President Saca expressed the hope that El Salvador will be able to benefit from Korea's experiences in economic development, adding that bilateral economic cooperation should be promoted along with economic aids from Korea. In particular, President Saca remarked that El Salvador is planning to host an international development and cooperation forum for the sake of middle- and low-income countries during the first half of 2007. He requested Korea, a major donor nation, to participate in the conference, and President Roh answered that he would positively review the opportunity.
The two leaders exchanged ideas on how to enhance the collaboration between Korea and the Central America Integration System (SICA). President Saca voiced his support for Korea's efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue diplomatically and peacefully, while expressing his strong backing for Korea's bid to host the 2012 World Expo in the southwestern city of Yeosu, approximately 420km south of Seoul.
President Saca's visit to Korea marks the first since President Fidel Sánchez Hernández visited Seoul 36 years ago for the first time as Salvadoran head of state.
