President Roh to attend APEC Leaders' Meeting and make state visit to Cambodia
The 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting
Korea's aim is to reinforce economic and trade diplomacy by enhancing substantive cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region. The country will also undertake the primary role in promoting collaboration among the APEC member economies.
The 14th APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting will be held in Hanoi, Vietnam from November 18 to 19 under the theme of "Towards a Dynamic Community for Sustainable Development and Prosperity." Leaders from 21 member economies are expected to attend the meeting, including Korea, the United States, Japan, China and Russia.
Over the two days, there will be two rounds of Economic Leaders' Meetings, a meeting of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), and luncheons and dinners for the leaders of the member economies.
President Roh, who chaired the 2005 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Busan and took the lead in advancing various discussions, is expected to contribute to the practical implementation of key agreements reached in the 2005 meeting. His presence in APEC Vietnam 2006 meeting will also serve as an important milestone in upgrading Korea's image as one of the advanced trading economies in the world.
On the occasion of the Economic Leaders' Meeting 2006, the Korean Government is planning to escalate Korea's diplomatic status on the multilateral stage, solidify cooperation with the international community for peace on the Korean Peninsula through the peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue, and further strengthen economic and trade diplomacy.
State Visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia
The state visit is expected to take the substantive cooperative relations between the two countries to the next level. President Roh is to attend the opening ceremony of the Angkor-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2006.
President Roh Moo-hyun will have a summit with Prime Minister Hun Sen during his state visit to Cambodia from November 19 to 22. In the meeting, the two leaders are anticipated to discuss ways to bolster bilateral collaboration in various areas, including Korea's aid and loans to Cambodia, cultural exchanges and bilateral consulate issues. They will also talk about the regional situation, including the Korean Peninsula and ways to work together in the international arena.
Included on the itinerary of the Korean President are meetings with Acting Head of State of Cambodia and Chairman of the Senate Chea Sim and Parliament Speaker Heng Samrin as well as attendance at a forum to be hosted by business leaders from the two countries.
The President will make a stop in Siem Reap, the province where the world famous Angkor temples are located, to attend the opening ceremony of Angkor-Gyeongju World Culture Expo 2006, which will be held November 21, 2006 through January 9, 2007.
President Roh's trip to Cambodia marks the first state visit by a Korean head of state to the Southeast Asian country since the normalization of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1997. Underscored by the President's November state visit and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's official visit to Korea in March, the year 2006 symbolizes the rapid warming up of bilateral ties.
