President Roh Holds Summit with Russian President Putin
President Roh and President Putin shared an understanding that it is crucial to pursue simultaneously pressure on and dialogue with North Korea under the principle of zero tolerance for North Korea's nuclear program. They also pledged mutual cooperation to bring about the early resumption and substantive progress of the Six-Party Talks.
In addition, the two heads of state expressed their satisfaction that the volume of bilateral trade has increased tremendously in recent years and that substantive cooperation is proceeding in a concrete manner based on the Action Plan as agreed between the two leaders. They also concurred to continue to work together so that bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy and resources, aerospace industry, and information and technology can be further promoted in a concrete manner. The two presidents would also enhance efforts for an early signing of two agreements, one to prevent illicit exportation of Russian maritime products and another to issue multiple visas for entrepreneurs. President Roh expressed his appreciation to President Putin for having taken pertinent actions for the resettlement of the Korean descents in Russia, including securing relevant legal grounds. President Roh also requested President Putin to show continued interest and consideration in this matter.
The Korea-Russia summit of this time follows an earlier one held a year ago on the sidelines of the 2005 Busan APEC and is expected to serve as an opportunity to further deepen and develop the Mutually Trustful and Comprehensive Partnership between the two leaders, which the two leaders agreed upon on the occasion of President Roh's visit to Russia in September 2004.
