Economist Conferences brings together more than 150 international business leaders for dialogue with Indian government

Hong Kong--(뉴스와이어)--India’s prime minister, Manmohan Singh, will lead key cabinet members in a high-level dialogue with foreign investors at the Economist Conferences’ Business Roundtable with the Government of India in Delhi on March 13th and 14th 2007.

The Business Roundtable, led by John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, comes at a time of rapidly expanding interest in India’s potential as a market, and as a destination for foreign direct investment. Business leaders will have a unique opportunity to engage policymakers on the ongoing reform process, and to discuss the key issues for businesses and investors.

Ravi Bhatia, Senior Economist and Asia Editor, with the Economist Intelligence Unit, commented, “The question CEOs must ask themselves today is not whether they should be in India, but whether they can really afford not to be there. India has either a viable market or a viable supplier for every major company’s goods and services.”

India - a prominent country on the world map

In the past few years India has established itself as a power to reckon with and a country that cannot be ignored by the rest of the world in all aspects·economic, political and social.

New figures released by the Central Statistical Organisation have led the Economist Intelligence Unit to revise up its estimate of real GDP growth in 2006/07 to 9.2% (from 8.8% previously). In addition, substantial acquisition activity has led the EIU to raise its forecast for both inbound and outbound direct investment in 2007-08.

India's overall score in the Economist Intelligence Unit's business environment rankings has risen to 6.24 in the forecast period (2007-11), from 5.31 in the historical period (2002-06). The improvement reflects progress in the foreign investment and foreign payments regimes, together with improved market opportunities. The main impediments to growth will be a restrictive labour market and the poor state of the country's infrastructure.

These and other key issues for the future of business in India will be debated by more than 150 senior corporate executives and our speaker faculty of government officials and international business leaders.
