President Roh Sends Congratulatory Message to the 43rd Joint Meeting of the Korea-Japan Cooperation Council
I wholeheartedly congratulate you on the opening of the Joint Meeting of the Korea-Japan Cooperation Council in Tokyo. I am also grateful to the council members for their endeavors to promote friendship as well as exchanges and cooperation between our two neighboring countries.
Since the normalization of diplomatic ties in 1965, our two countries have grown into close neighbors on the economic front and in many other areas. People-to-people and cultural exchanges are becoming more active as attested by nearly 4.6 million visitors who traveled between the two countries last year alone.
There are still many issues to be resolved, however, if Korea and Japan are to become even closer neighbors. Most importantly, people from both countries should have respect for historic truth and actions that reinforce such respect. Through this effort, Korea and Japan need to continue with the path toward a greater partnership.
The agreement made at the Six-Party Talks in Beijing on February 13 this year will serve as a turning point in the effort to construct an order of cooperation and integration in Northeast Asia as well as to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue. I hope that Korea and Japan will collaborate closely and contribute greatly to carrying out the agreement successfully.
In light of this, it is significant that leaders from the two countries have met at this general meeting to discuss the Northeast Asian situation and Korea-Japan cooperation, and I trust that the joint meeting will reap good results.
I wish the bilateral cooperation council everlasting progress.
Thank you.
