President to Visit 3 Middle East Nations on March 24 - 29
Visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (March 24-26)
President Roh Moo-hyun and King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz will hold a summit and discuss the current international situation including issues involving the Korean Peninsula and the Middle East as well as ways to strengthen comprehensive and substantive collaboration between Korea and Saudi Arabia.
President Roh is scheduled to visit and address the Shoura Council, the legislative body of Saudi Arabia, to present the Korea-Middle East Cooperative Initiative for the 21st Century and elucidate the plan to pursue common prosperity as a partner in the Middle East in the pursuit of peace and to promote economic and cultural relations.
President Roh’s visit to Saudi Arabia is the first by a South Korean head of state in 27 years since former President Choi Kyu-hah visited the country in 1980. The Korean President’s visit is expected to serve as an opportunity to further deepen bilateral cooperation in such areas as energy, natural resources and construction projects and to diversify collaborative ties into other fields including information and communication technology, education, culture and technology.
Visit to the State of Kuwait (March 26-27)
President Roh Moo-hyun will visit the State of Kuwait on the second leg of his trip to the Middle East. The Korean head of state and Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah will hold a summit to discuss ways to step up bilateral cooperation in diverse areas. President Roh will also meet with Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser, attend a forum hosted by business leaders from both countries and hold a meeting with leaders of Korean residents in Kuwait.
President Roh’s visit to Kuwait is anticipated to further solidify bilateral relations. Korea and Kuwait have been closely working together for stability and security in the Middle Eastern region. The two countries are also expected to create a momentum for expanding and developing the current cooperative relationship in energy and construction projects into various other spheres on the basis of respective geopolitical advantages and mutually complementary economic structures.
In addition, Korea will share its experience of economic development and push to craft a joint program to cultivate human capital with Kuwait, which is now charting a policy of new national development strategies and industrial diversification. By doing so, the two countries will be able to build up more extensive cooperative relations.
Visit to the State of Qatar (March 27 to 29)
On the final leg of his visit to the Middle East, President Roh will fly to Qatar and hold a summit meeting with Qatari Amir Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to discuss ways to improve substantive cooperation and the recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East. The President is also scheduled to make a stop at the construction site of the Ras Laffan Refinery that a consortium of Korean companies is building, followed by his attendance at a Korean construction and IT exhibition and luncheon hosted by business leaders of the two countries.
President Roh’s trip to Qatar marks the first visit by a Korean President since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1974, representing a favorable opportunity to strengthen ties with the country that has closely collaborated in natural resources and shipbuilding. A country with a population of nearly 900,000, Qatar is achieving an annual economic growth of 20 percent in recent years and rapidly rising as an emerging market in the region. Qatar has expressed a great deal of interest in collaboration with Korea, the country’s biggest LNG export market, which it views as a hub for expanding its marketing footprints across Northeast Asia.
