President Roh Meets French Defense Minister
At the meeting, President Roh expressed satisfaction with the fact that cooperative and friendly ties between the two countries have been expanding in various sectors based on a 120-year-long tradition of diplomatic ties and the participation in the Korean War by French troops. The Korean President called upon the French Minister to exert greater efforts and show more concern so that it will be possible to take bilateral relations to a new height and establish a comprehensive partnership in the foreseeable future.
Expressing his views on Korean-French relations in defense affairs, President Roh highlighted the importance of strengthening substantive cooperation between the two countries. While praising the French Government’s success in revamping its national defense, the President reiterated his vow to continue defense reform in Korea.
The President and Minister Alliot-Marie exchanged opinions on recent developments in the region, including the prospect of resolving the North Korean nuclear issue and the outlook for inter-Korean relations as well as multilateral security cooperation in Northeast Asia. President Roh also commented that the wisdom of coexistence embodied in the European Union could be viewed as an important precedent and model for Northeast Asia where countries are seeking to foster a community of peace and prosperity.
The French official expressed high expectations for the future of Korean-French relations, saying that she hopes to see the friendly bilateral ties develop into substantial, high-level cooperation in the area of military exchanges and the defense industry in particular.
Minister Alliot-Marie has been French Defense Minister since 2002 and is affiliated with the UMP (Union for a Popular Movement). She once was the president of the RPR (Rally for the Republic), the predecessor of the UMP.
