President Roh Meets with Sheikh Sabah of Kuwait
The two heads of state expressed their appreciation of the fact that bilateral relations have continued to progress since the diplomatic relationship was formed. They also concurred on the need to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and develop it into a comprehensive and future-oriented partnership in various sectors, including energy and construction/plant projects as well as Information Technology (IT) and culture. To this end, the two leaders agreed that Korea and Kuwait would hold meetings of a senior-level joint committee on a regular basis.
His Highness Sheikh Sabah expressed keen interest in Korea’s experience in economic development as an exemplary model for Kuwait’s national development strategies. President Roh responded by saying that Korea is willing to share its expertise in economic development with Kuwait and provide active support for establishing a joint program to nurture human resources between the two nations.
The two heads of state discussed recent developments on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East and expressed a shared view that the issue of the North Korean nuclear program and the Middle Eastern conflicts should be resolved peacefully.
After offering his gratitude for the Korean forces’ contribution to bringing back freedom to Kuwait during the Gulf War in 1990, His Highness Sheikh Sabah lauded Korea’s decision to send its men and women in uniform to Iraq and Kuwait as well as to the mission of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
President Roh thanked the Kuwaiti Government and its citizens for their warm welcome and invited His Highness Sheikh Sabah to visit Korea at a mutually convenient date.
Shortly after the summit, the President and the Kuwaiti head of state mutually awarded each other the Grand Order of Mugunghwa and the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Necklace, their respective nations' highest distinctions conferred on foreign heads of state. They also attended the signing ceremony for a mutual legal assistance treaty in criminal matters and a cooperative agreement in construction.
