President Praises China’s Role in 6-Party Talks
Your Excellency Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and distinguished guests from home and abroad,
I am very pleased to have such an honored guest here tonight from a very close neighboring country. His Excellency is visiting Korea for the first time. My pleasure is all the greater because his visit has been long awaited. I wholeheartedly welcome the Prime Minister and his delegation.
This is my ninth meeting with the Prime Minster Wen. Every time I met him, I was deeply impressed by his extensive insight and profound understanding of Korea. His Excellency is also a popular leader even among the Korean people.
With his firm resolve to accomplish reform and openness, Prime Minister Wen has been leading China’s economic growth, which has registered more than 9 percent annually. In addition, His Excellency is well known for his humbleness and frugality so that he is called the “Prime Minister of the common people.” Many politicians around the world as well as in China emulate his political philosophy of working “for the people,” putting top priority on the well-being of ordinary citizens.
It is well known that the Chinese people’s affection and confidence in His Excellency is by no means a fragile bubble or passing breeze. I am confident that His Excellency’s leadership and the potential of the Chinese people will help develop China into an even more prosperous and harmonious society.
Mr. Prime Minister,
I would like to talk briefly about amicable collaboration between Korea and China.
China is already Korea’s biggest trading partner and the number one destination for Korean investment. Korea is China’s third largest trading partner. Individual exchanges grew markedly, illustrated by the more than 13,000 people shuttling between the two countries everyday and more than 50,000 Korean students studying in China. It brings me great joy that the two countries’ relations are rapidly growing since we declared a comprehensive cooperative partnership in 2003.
The summit we had today reaffirmed the close friendship between our two nations. The two of us decided to strengthen substantive cooperation in trade, investment, IT, science and technology as well as labor and the environment. In this Year of Korea-China Friendship, we also agreed to expand people-to-people exchanges in such areas as culture, academic affairs and sports.
Thus far, the Chinese Government, serving as chair of the Six-Party Talks, has endeavored actively to find a resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue and to bring about peace on the Korean Peninsula. Again, I take this opportunity to thank the Chinese Government, and at the same time, ask that it continue to play this important role.
I hope that the two countries will be able to further bolster bilateral goodwill and friendship, while working toward eliminating elements impeding bilateral collaboration. In this way, we will be partners in carving out an age of a peaceful and prosperous Northeast Asia.
