First Lady Kwon Yang-suk sends congratulatory message to the Women Leaders Congress for Peaceful Unification
The full text of the First Lady’s remarks follows.
Good afternoon,
I wholeheartedly congratulate you on the opening of the first meeting of the Women Leaders Congress for Peaceful Unification today. I am grateful to the Chairwoman Shim Young-hee and all the delegates for your dedication to the progress of Korean women and the effort to bring about peaceful reunification on the Korean Peninsula. I offer all of you my deep appreciation and words of encouragement.
As you are well aware, the Republic has made great headway in inter-Korean relations under the previous Government of the People and the incumbent Participatory Government.
Inter-Korean trade more than doubled, and people traveling between the divided land topped 100,000 last year alone even after excluding the tourists to Kumgangsan (Mountain). The railroads linking the two Koreas, the Seoul-Sinuiju Railway and Donghae Line, will conduct pilot operation during the first half of this year. Most importantly, the Gaeseong Industrial Complex, where 12,000 South and North Koreans work alongside, is a symbolic example which illustrates changing inter-Korean relations.
With the North Korean nuclear issue inching its way toward resolution in recent years, reunion of the separated families and sporting exchanges between the two Koreas have gained momentum.
Accordingly, it is my belief that the role of Korean women is becoming increasingly important. You are already serving as a role model for promoting inter-Korean reconciliation, helping the new arrivals from the North to settle in the South and giving support to the North Korean children in need.
I trust that you will continue to contribute greatly to boosting women’s interest and participation in the inter-Korean issues in the future as well as to facilitating the two Koreas’ efforts to promote peace and common prosperity.
Once again, I congratulate you on this inaugural meeting of the Women Leaders Congress for Peaceful Unification. I wish every one of you success.
