Remarks by First Lady Kwon Yang-suk at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Korea International Art Fair
I congratulate you on the opening of the 2007 Korea International Art Fair (KIAF). I wholeheartedly welcome operators of art galleries from many countries to Seoul. My deep gratitude also goes to Chairman Kim Young-ho of the KIAF 2007 Organizing Committee, Chairperson Lee Hyun-sook of the KIAF 2007 Operation Committee, and members of the Galleries Association of Korea as well as all the artists who are exhibiting their fine works in the fair.
KIAF has contributed to revitalizing the art market in Korea and promoting Korean arts throughout the world by discovering competent artists.
Notably, the number of entries has more than doubled this year, and there is a greater variety in the program. It is also significant that Spain is participating as the guest country this time following Korea’s participation as the guest country at ARCO 2007, the International Contemporary Art Fair in Spain last February. KIAF can now stand in comparison to any leading art fair around the world.
The Government will do its share to further boost art fairs and nurture connoisseurs of art works, actively supporting the development of the Korean art market and the creative expression of artists.

Whenever I travel abroad, I always stop by art galleries and museums. That is because when I go to these places, I get to see and feel the unique culture and arts of the country that I am visiting.
Art and culture are indeed the seed of progress for all peoples. Not only do they enrich our lives, but they also, in and of themselves, add a competitive advantage to a nation and its citizens.
Particularly, the power of creation and imagination employed in painting, photography and other forms of visual arts is boundless, indeed. As artists create beauty by mixing colors and lines, I hope citizens of the world will be able to harmonize their values and cultures, assuring common progress.
I have no doubt that this art fair will substantially contribute to broadening understanding and insight into art while bolstering exchanges and friendship among artists of the world.
I trust that this gathering will yield an abundance of fruit, and I wish every one of you success and happiness.
