President sends congratulatory message on the 2551st birthday of the Buddha
Along with all the Korean people, I congratulate the Buddhist community on the 2551st Birthday of the Buddha and extend my admiration for the lofty virtues of the Buddha.
Sakyamuni attained enlightenment and became the Buddha, through renunciation and ascetic practices. The Buddha also taught the philosophy of the Buddha nature and great compassion to shed a bright light on the road on which humanity has to walk. Notably, Buddhism in Korea has served as a catalyst for the creation of a splendid culture while witnessing the joys and sorrows of the people. It has also been a great driving force behind the country’s efforts to overcome crises and achieve progress.
It is now time to put our strength together to turn Korea into an advanced nation·a transparent and fair society where principles and common sense prevail, and undue privileges and discrimination have no place to go; a competitive nation thriving under a vibrant economy where a creative spirit and diversity blossom; and a hopeful nation where there is no fear of sickness, life after retirement and housing, and where fair opportunities are ensured. This is what we aspire to and what an advanced Korea is all about.
More than anything, we have to enhance the level of mutual trust and integration a step. This means we have to admit that the other side could be right. We should try to solve problems through dialogue and compromise, and even after a conclusion is reached we have to cooperate. What has been promised should be carried out with responsibility so that our society will have a higher degree of predictability. The nation needs to find out ways by which the capital region and provincial areas, labor and management, regular employees and irregular workers as well as big corporations and small businesses can progress together.
I trust that the Buddhist community that has been in the forefront of practicing principles of harmony and coexistence will play a central role in the nation’s march toward an advanced Korea.
Once more, I join you all in the celebration of Buddha’s coming and wish that the world would be brimming with His mercy and glory.
