Congratulatory message from President Roh Moo-hyun on the opening of the International Citizen Reporters’ Forum
Online citizen journalism has opened a new horizon for politics and the media. You are at the forefront of efforts to make the flow of information more transparent and to empower the consumers to stand at the center of the media market. Your creative and voluntary participation has brought various issues to the table of debate; netizens in cyberspace can engage in vibrant discussions while shaping a balanced public opinion. I am grateful to you for taking the lead in promoting the development of journalism.
Decoupling the chain of collusion between the government and the media, my Administration has maintained healthy tension with media organizations. In particular, the Internet News Briefing on Government Affairs and Cheong Wa Dae’s Internet news bulletin, Cheong Wa Dae Briefing, are establishing themselves as essential tools in the Government’s efforts to accurately inform the public of policy issues of current interest and to facilitate close communication with Korean citizens.
The media has to change if our society is to advance. The most powerful force that raises the standards of the media is no other than the participation of alert citizens. The standards of the media and quality of its products can improve when more citizens participate in the production and distribution stages and use their responsible criticism to act as a check against the possibility of the media morphing into a political power. Moreover, solidarity between the media organizations that are actively participated in by citizens will greatly contribute to advancing democracy globally.
When I retire from the presidency, I plan to participate myself in the movement aimed at realizing a society in which the citizens are the sovereign entity both in name and substance. Once again, I congratulate you on holding this rewarding forum, and I wish every one of you success.
Thank you.
