Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--President Roh Moo-hyun met with Director General Mohamed ElBaradei of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 70 minutes this afternoon, substantially longer than originally scheduled 30 minutes.

The Korean head of state welcomed the IAEA Director General who visited Seoul at the critical juncture for resolving the North Korean nuclear issue. The IAEA Director General noted that inspectors of the U.N. nuclear agency are scheduled to return to North Korea on July 14 and resume monitoring nuclear reactors in that country. He also expressed the hope that the inspection would lead Pyongyang to rejoin the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) system and dismantle all its nuclear weapons.

ElBaradei said that this process would be complex and difficult but stressed that all parties concerned should recognize the North as a negotiation partner, approach it with respect and patience, and engage it in continuous dialogue.

President Roh thanked Mr. ElBaradei for supporting the effort to resolve the North’s nuclear issue consistently from a rational standpoint. He stated that South Korea has been persevering with and respecting Pyongyang’s position even when Pyongyang did not seem rational. As a result, mutual trust has been deepened gradually.

ElBaradei expressed satisfaction over the fact that IAEA and South Korea have cooperated all along in all areas of mutual concern. He said that such a close collaboration would continue into the future.
