President awarded for anti-epidemic effort
The Union Générale des Elus Municipaux de Cote D’Ivoire was established in 2003 for the purpose of providing various services and guiding the public to achieve the restoration of peace and socioeconomic development. An association encompassing 176 local governments, the Union has conferred the Grand Prix de Development de Cote d’Ivore upon foreign heads of state who made a positive contribution to peace and development of the Cote D’Ivore.
The Cote d’Ivoire organization chose President Roh as the recipient of the Grand Prize for giving courage and hope to the citizens of the country through his initiative for immunizing them against meningitis. During 2006-2007 period, the Korean government offered US$520,000 worth of immunization shots through World Health Organization (WHO). Meningitis usually breaks out in the northern part of the African country during the December-April dry season with the onslaught of dust from the Sahara Desert.
A total of 101 Cote d’Ivoire citizens were victimized by the disease in 2005 and another 116 last year. The African republic initiated an immunization program covering some 1.6 million people in the northern area with the vaccine Seoul offered. There has not been a single reported case of death from meningitis this year. In 2006, President George W. Bush received the Grand Prize for his contribution to the welfare of the Cote d’Ivoire people.
