Seoul--(뉴스와이어)--President Roh Moo-hyun held a summit with President Vladimir Putin of Russia at the Sydney Marriott Hotel after the conclusion of the official schedule of the 15th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting this afternoon. At the summit, the two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest, including recent developments surrounding the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, ways to bolster substantive bilateral cooperation and Korea’s bid to host the 2012 World EXPO in Yeosu city.

President Roh gave high marks to Russia’s contributions to the process that will eventually lead to a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue. The two heads of state concurred on the need to continually work closely together in the course of implementing denuclearization of the North. In addition, they exchanged views on the upcoming inter-Korean summit, which is slated for early October.

The two leaders gave a high evaluation to the development and deepening of the mutually trustful and comprehensive partnership as witnessed by the implementation of the Action Plan for Economic and Trade Cooperation agreed upon between the two nations in 2005. Expressing satisfaction with such progress, both heads of state concurred that they will continue to work together to further expand cooperation in such wide-ranging areas as trade and investment, resources and energy, the aerospace industry and IT.

The major achievements of the Action Plan include the opening of the Korean Consulate General in St. Petersburg and bolstered collaboration in the aerospace sector through the astronauts training project and the agreement on cooperation to develop aerospace technologies. In addition, a center has been opened in Moscow to assist small and medium-size enterprises, and cooperation had been enhanced in the natural gas industry.
